All waters downstream of STW are no longer managed under extended season regulations. In addition to being stocked during the preseason period before opening day, these highly prized fish featuring vibrant golden-orange pigmentation and weighing an average of 1.5 pounds will be stocked during in-season replenishment stockings. Approximately 80% of golden Rainbow Trout will be stocked during the preseason, and approximately 20% will be stocked in-season. Plan on adding a few extra days to your fishing adventure, whether it be a solo trip, a trip with your best pals, or an outdoor-themed family vacation. The area is home to many fantastic attractions, including Knoebels Amusement Resort, Bill’s Old Bike Barn, Ricketts Glen State Park, the Montour Preserve, 25 historic covered bridges, and much more.
Fall and winter trout stockings during 2022 will include 30 waters located withinPennsylvania State Parks, with many parks featuring easy angler access from shore, boat ramps, and amenities such as bathrooms. “Fishing during the fall, especially, provides some of the most beautiful scenery and comfortable temperatures of the year as you enjoy an adventure on your favorite stream or lake,” said Brian Wisner, Director of the PFBC Bureau of Hatcheries. In 2022, anglers will have an excellent chance to catch large, trophy-sized trout.
Anglers ages 16 and older must have a valid Pennsylvania fishing license and trout permit. During the extended trout season (September 6 – December 31, 2022, and January 1 – February 20, 2023), the daily creel limit is three trout of combined species with a minimum size of seven inches, unless a water is managed under special regulations. 2022 fishing licenses and permits can be purchased online atFishandboat.comor by visiting one of the nearly 700 retail license issuing agents. Each year, the PFBC adjusts its adult trout stocking program based on several factors. Along with the waters being stocked with trout this fall, anglers can check out the list ofPennsylvania’s Best Fishing Waterson the PFBC website andFishBoatPA mobile app. This list is based on biologist surveys of fish populations on waters across the state and can lead you to prime fall and winter fishing spots for trout and many other popular fish including Smallmouth Bass, Walleye, panfish, and catfish.
This float is best by paddlecraft, as during summer and lower-water periods, there may be extremely shallow areas and submerged boulders and ledges. A decrease in stream access has led to the removal of trout stocking from a 3.2-mile section of stream extending from the first unnamed tributary 1.4 mile upstream of Fetzer Hollow downstream to the mouth. Fish previously stocked in this stream will now be stocked in Black Moshannon Creek, Centre County. In October alone, the PFBC will stock approximately 86,200 trout into 90 waters, including 52 lakes and 38 stream sections, including 11 Keystone Select Trout Waters, which are managed under Delayed Harvest Artificial Lures Only regulations.
Fish-for-Free Days allow anyone (resident or non-resident) to legally fish on Pennsylvania waterways on the designated days with NO FISHING LICENSE REQUIRED (Trout/Salmon and Lake Erie permits are also NOT required).All otherfishing regulationsstill apply. Roughly 70% of these large fish will be stocked into streams and lakes during the preseason prior to opening day of trout season, and 30% will be stocked during in-season replenishment stockings. Trout waters have close approximately a month before the trout season opening days. What this means is that approved stocked trout waters are off limits to trout fishing during this closed period. Fortunately, there are still plenty of trout fishing opportunities to be had even during the closed period. These waters are open to trout fishing in Pennsylvania from opening day, through the extended season, and then closed to fishing usually on March 1st the following year. During the closed periods on these waters, not person shall be fishing for trout or even taking bait such as minnows. Trout that are stocked during fall and winter can be fished for immediately.
HARRISBURG, Pa. – The summer season may be winding to a close, but some fantastic trout fishing opportunities are approaching on dozens of Pennsylvania waterways this fall and winter. The Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission will stock approximately 3.2 million adult trout in 696 streams and 128 lakes open to public angling. These figures, which are consistent with the number of trout stocked over the past decade, include approximately 2.2 million Rainbow Trout; 686,000 Brown Trout; and 293,000 Brook Trout. As with past practice, the average size of the trout produced for stocking is 11 inches in length with an average weight of .58 pounds. To participate in trout fishing and keep trout, anglers ages 16 and older require both a fishing license and a trout permit.
There are many trout fishing opportunities across the state where you can fish in many different kinds of waters and fish them many different ways. Put your trout fishing rigs or your fly fishing skills to the test and head out and fish one of our favorite late-season year-round trout waters. Located near the Borough of Shinglehouse, an 8.1-mile section of stream extending from Post Hollow Road bridge downstream to Horse Run Road bridge will be added to the adult trout stocking program. Brown Trout and Rainbow Trout will be stocked during the preseason and in-season stocking periods.
