How-to Maintain Your Fishing Rods & Reels
If you’re fishing in saltwater, cleaning your rod after each and every outing is best. That’s because salt water can quickly lead to annoying corrosion and rust on all of the rod components. That means you need to pay attention to not only the rod, but also the reel, guides, and handle.
For grips in really bad shape you might need to soak them in soapy water and scrub them again. Be careful when using an Eraser on a fishing rod as they are slightly abrasive. You don’t want to dig into the cork too deep or damage the finish of the actual rod.
For non-hunters: Home Depot , ACE, Lowes, Tractor Supply … buy small animal traps 😉 (& bird seed or suet feed for bait)

A Magic Eraser can be used to refresh cork handles, and Q-tip’s should be used to clean and inspect your eyelets. The specifics of properly cleaning each rod component can be found below. After getting back from your fishing trip, removing the reels, and clipping lines, wash saltwater fishing rods with gentle soap and warm water.

It may seem like tedious work, but rod care should be part of your day-to-to fishing routine. If it’s just the butt of the rod that is fine, but you never want to submerge the reel in water. If you dunk a reel while wade fishing it would be best to have that reel taken apart and cleaned out as soon as you can. After finishing maintenance on the moving parts, wipe away any excess lubricant from the reel and other components. Tighten visible screws and administer a final coating of WD-40 Specialist Silicone. This step is especially important before long storage during the off season.
Also, never store your saltwater rods before cleaning as corrosion could occur. This also applies for conventional rods, spinning rods, and other fishing rods. After “erasing” any dirt and grime from your cork handle you can seal the cork with a product called U-40 Cork Sealant, pictured below. This product seals the surface of the cork and helps protect it from deteriorating. It also allows for easier cleaning with just soap and water in the future.
