Unfortunately, “All it takes is one boat to anchor and the progression down the jetties is brought to a screeching halt,” Reynolds says. “After one boat anchors, there’s a mad dash to get in a good spot and drop anchor. Trolling a small spread of lures while making passes past one or more jetties can also be effective.
If you’ve ever fished “rip-rap” along the face of an impoundment dam, in a similar manner, these long, man-made piles of rocks create a significant amount of surface area for starting the food chain with algae. Soon afterwards shellfish, snails, crabs, and such appear and then opportunistic fish are right behind them. Make sure to move down the rocks if you are not getting any bites after about 20 minutes or so; try to cover as much water as you can with your lures. If you feel you are in the right spot but not getting any hits, change up the style of plastic lure or try a smaller or bigger offering. Just keep mixing it up to find what they are willing to strike. Rig this up simply with a hook or two up the mainline and a sinker on the bottom.

When packing a gear bag for the jetty you have two options. Either go light with a belt bag or get a large shoulder bag packed with all the essentials that you can place on a rock next to you. You don’t want to be wearing a large bag while you’re actually fishing because mobility is important. Use a large salmon bobber that will work with an ounce or two of lead, and set the distance to be around 15 feet to start. I then just slowly add a little more depth on each consecutive cast until I know my bait is dancing in the water below the bobber, near the bottom but not dragging in the rocks. Depending on the current in the areas you are fishing in, you may need a lead sinker that ways anywhere from one to six ounces; if the current is really strong, you may need a heavier weight. If the jetty bite is slow, Clowers heads inside to the channels and back bays for bass, bonefish and shortfin corvina.
