How to Tie an Arbor Knot
Use the handle to wind the string onto the reel in the same direction the reel spins. Finally, screw the cap back on and cut off any extra line. Over time, your fishing line wears out, tangles more easily, and becomes more difficult to catch.

You place the reel foot into the reel seat then screw it down all the way until it is tight and secured. You never want your reel loose because it can cause damage. Remember to open the bail on the reel and keep it open while spooling.

Often there is a small catch designed to hold it tight as well. As long as it is going onto the reel in a uniform fashion you should be fine. Simply the best way to tie any fishing line to any spool.
Run the lighter line through it and wrap it 10 times over the heavier line back towards the loop. Bring it back down through the loop and pull the the lines tight. Wrap the end of the backing line around the groove in the spool.
Begin by assembling your rod and ensuring all the eyes line up, the same way you would if you were setting up for fishing. Then, grab your spinning reel, jerk it in the reel seat and tighten it until the spinning reel is secure. It’s your most direct connection to the fish, so if twist or memory inhibits casting distance or breaking strength, be sure to respool. Even with a premium line it’s cheap insurance against losing the fish of a lifetime. Treat monofilament, copolymer and fluorocarbon lines with a line conditioner after each use.
To compensate, flip the spool of new fishing line so that the label faces the ground. Wrap the end of the fishing line over the spool, which is the indentation in the middle of the reel. Bring the end of the line back towards you and tie the line together in an arbor knot. The main thing to remember is that the spool needs to be gathering up line, so make sure your slip knot isn’t allowing it to spin without grabbing it tight.
If you miss this step you may find yourself starting over. Use a screwdriver or other tool to hold the line spool and allow it to freely spin as the line comes off. Stand up, face the spool on the floor, hold the rod parallel, and put a bit of elbow grease on the line. Secondly, you’ll see the loops twisting over onto themselves into coils that look quite contrary from relaxed. Therefore, if you notice anything other than that, you’ll need to flip the spool over and repeat the process.
You’ll place the lines side by side, facing opposite directions before looping them into a knot. Spool the entire tippet line onto your reel when done. Hold the line taut between your thumb and index finger, applying a little bit of pressure to keep the line straight.
Twist the tag end around the standing end of the fishing line. Thanks to all authors for creating a page that has been read 1,383,792 times. Never dispose of old line by throwing it on the ground or into the water. Birds and fish get tangled in old line and die. It’s important to do this with every line in order to prevent tangles.
